Glazed pots don’t need to be seasoned. The best unglazed clay pots for cooking are those that are:

  • Heavy and thick.
  • Turn back, knock, and see,
  • You should hear a heavy tang sound
  • You should not hear a hollow sound. 

Here is the way how to season an earthenware pot:

First Step: 

Rinse & Wash your Clay pot with water. This is the way how to clean clay pots for cooking.

Second Step: 

Soak the Claypots in plain water for 24 hours. After 24 hours, remove the pots from the water. It is better to use warm water. Don’t use hot water and cold water.

Third Step: 

Scrub and wash the pot in water under the tap. With a plastic scrubber or Coconut scrubber.

Note: – Do not use steel scrubber. Do not use soap and do not earthenwere put in dishwasher.

Fourth Step: 

Wipe the pots with a cloth & Sun dry them for some time (until dried) 2 – 3 hours.

Fifth Step: 

Add Coconut Oil or Ghee and Spread on both sides. Let the oil absorb & keep aside for an hour.

Sixth Step: 

Pour cooked Rice water (Starch water) & keep overnight. 

Seventh Step: 

Next Day, keep the earthenware pots on stoves. Switch on the stove (medium heat). Avoid extreme temperature also sudden temperature  & Let the starch water come to a boil 

Eighth Step: 

Let it cool down completely. Scrub with a soft sponge and wash it under tap water. With a plastic scrubber or Coconut scrubber. 

Note: Never use detergents or any soap liquids to wash Clay pots. Wash with Rice Flour or Salt instead.

Final Step: 

Switch on the stove. Low flame. Add any cooking oil. Add one Onion sliced. Fry the onion and try it for the first time to eliminate any mud smell.
